San José Symphonic Choir is the premier volunteer choral society in California, presenting choral masterworks and contemporary pieces since 1924. It has been under the inspiring leadership of Maestro Leroy Kromm since 1985.
The 110-voice Choir commissions and performs works by local composers, pieces that bring attention to concerns in our communities. In 1996 the Choir performed the world premiere of Requiem For Lost Children by Sondra Clark and, in 2003, participated in the world premiere of Sisters, Craig Bohmler’s work honoring San José and her sister cities. In 2006 the Choir produced and performed the world premiere of Beatitude Mass, by Henry Mollicone. To date, performances of Beatitude Mass around the nation, and our recording of the first performance, have raised over $85,000 to benefit charities that serve the needy worldwide.
Continuing in this tradition, on March 5, 2010 the Choir will present the world premiere of Henry Mollicone’s Misa de los Inmigrantes at Mission Santa Clara. Mollicone’s newest piece was written to raise awareness of the hardships faced by immigrants.
The highly acclaimed Choir will also perform three choral masterworks this season.
· Ralph Vaughan Williams’ majestic Sea Symphony called by Robert Shaw “the most beautiful piece of choral music written in the 20th century”. November 28, 2009, 8 PM, Saint Joseph Cathedral Basilica
· 30th annual You-Sing-It Messiah, a community sing-along of Handel’s beloved oratorio and a December tradition at the California Theatre, December 7, 2009, 7:30 PM
· Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, an elegant, profound and moving meditation by one of the greatest French Romantic composers, May 2, 2010, 3 PM at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Saratoga.
